Apps to replace sports betting

What actually works, what each option is good at, and where the real help is. Written by a free game that knows it is not treatment.

The plain answer

If you want the ritual of sports betting without the money, a free-to-play prediction game keeps the part that was fun and removes the part that was expensive. Ledger is one option: real markets, real settlement, no deposits, no cash-outs. And if betting has become a problem rather than a habit, a game is not treatment. Real help is at 1-800-GAMBLER.

If you are worried about your betting, start with the helpline, not an app. Call or text 1-800-GAMBLER (1-800-426-2537), or chat at ncpgambling.org/chat. It is free, confidential, and answered around the clock. Warning signs and more resources are on our responsible play page.

What made betting fun, and what made it expensive?

The fun was never the losing. It was the read: watching a matchup, forming an opinion, putting your name on it, and finding out if you were right. The expensive part was the hold, the share of every wagered dollar the book keeps. Estimates drawn from published state sportsbook revenue reports, such as the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement and Nevada Gaming Control Board monthlies, put hold around 8 percent on straight bets, and parlays commonly hold 20 percent or more. The full sourcing is in our guide to how sportsbooks make money.

Every option below is really a decision about which part you keep. Blockers and self-exclusion remove the whole thing, access and ritual together. Communities replace the isolation. A free game keeps the ritual and removes the money. Different jobs, and it is worth being clear about which one you are hiring for.

What apps can replace sports betting?

The real options fall into four groups. Blockers like Gamban cut off access to gambling sites and apps at the device level. Self-exclusion programs, like GamStop in the UK and state programs in the US, bar you from licensed operators. Communities like r/problemgambling and Gamblers Anonymous offer peer support, and 1-800-GAMBLER offers professional help. Free-to-play games, Ledger among them, keep the ritual and remove the money.

Blocking software

Gamban is the best-known blocker: a paid subscription app, with a short free trial, that blocks gambling sites and apps across your devices and keeps its blocklist updated, including offshore and unlicensed sites. It is good at removing the two-taps-from-a-bet problem in a weak moment. Some banks can also block gambling transactions on your card if you turn the setting on. Blockers buy you distance. They do not treat anything, and they are honest about that.

Self-exclusion programs

GamStop is the UK's free national scheme: one signup bars you from every gambling site licensed in Great Britain, for the period you choose. In the US, self-exclusion runs state by state through gaming regulators, and licensed sportsbooks also offer their own exclusion and deposit-limit tools in settings. Self-exclusion is good at making the decision official and hard to undo on impulse. Its limit is that unlicensed sites sit outside these schemes, which is where blockers help.

Community and professional support

r/problemgambling is a peer community on Reddit where people post day counts, relapses, and plain advice from experience. Gamblers Anonymous runs free meetings, in person and online. And the National Problem Gambling Helpline at 1-800-GAMBLER connects you to trained specialists and state resources by call, text, or chat. These are good at the thing no app does: another person.

Free-to-play games

Pick'em games, streak games, and prediction games like Ledger keep the read-and-sweat part and remove the money. The honest requirements for this to work: real markets, real grading against real results, a record you keep, and no mechanics that push volume. A free game built on casino pressure loops is just a casino with the checkout removed.

How does Ledger handle the pull to keep playing?

Structurally. The Dividend grants free Float every week, plus more when players collectively rest, and it is never triggered by losses. A once-daily cool-off clears your loss streak and grants Float for stepping away. Nothing in the product counts down or expires. And Scout, the in-app companion, never pushes picks unprompted, never promises a win, and never manufactures urgency.

These are checkable mechanics, not wellness language. Each rest day is a server-written record, one per account per day, so it cannot be faked. The Dividend drops 750 Float for every player every week, and another 250 for every 25 rest days players take together. At a casino, the payout comes when the house wins. Here, it comes when you keep your money, and when you rest.

Can a free game help you stop sports betting?

A free game can give the habit somewhere to go: the same reads, the same sweat, none of the money. That is replacement, not treatment. If betting is costing you money you need, or you are hiding it or chasing losses, a game is not the tool. Call or text 1-800-GAMBLER, free and confidential, any hour.

We want to be plain about this because this page will be found by people at very different points. If betting is a habit you would rather not pay for, a game can be a good place to put it. If betting is a problem, no game is a program: not Ledger, not anything on this page except the helpline, the meetings, and the professionals they connect you to. The warning signs are listed on our responsible play page, and inside Ledger the helpline is one tap away at all times.

Where do you start?

If it is the money, not the game, that worries you: try the free option first and see if the ritual was the point all along. Ledger's board is open without an account. Make a call, watch it settle on the real result, keep the record. If it is more than the money, start with the phone number instead. Both doors are real, and there is no wrong order to try them in as long as the helpline is one of them.

Descriptions of Gamban, GamStop, and other third-party services reflect their public documentation as of July 2026; check each service for current terms. Hold rates are estimates drawn from published state sportsbook revenue reports, sourced in full in how sportsbooks make money. Ledger is not affiliated with any service named on this page.
